Highways in moose and deer country are fenced, but animals still slip in where the fence stops.

Highways in moose and deer country are fenced, but animals still slip in where the fence stops. To get them out, engineers build "jump-outs": earth ramps against the fence. From the road side an animal walks up and jumps down into the forest; from the forest side it's a wall too high to climb back in. Many deer stop at the top and turn back, so in Montana engineers lowered the drop from about six feet to five and added a bar on top, and at least twice as many mule deer jumped out.
