Why the Sign Says 50 on an Empty Road
You're on a quiet motorway and the sign above you drops to a lower speed, with its lights flashing.

You're on a quiet motorway and the sign above you drops to a lower speed, with its lights flashing. Traffic looks fine, so why? Loops in the road measure the speed of every car. When cars far ahead brake hard, the system sees the speed drop and switches the signs on, one gantry after another, back towards you. So you slow down before you can see the jam.
