The Country That Drives Everyone Else's Cargo

Drive anywhere in western Europe and you will pass a Polish lorry within a minute.

From the video's description

Drive anywhere in western Europe and you will pass a Polish lorry within a minute. That truck may have loaded in Rotterdam and be unloading in Milan. It hasn't been to Poland in weeks.

Poland moves more road freight than any other country in the European Union — more than Germany, which is twice the economy and sits in the middle of the continent. In cross-trade, the business of carrying goods between two countries that aren't your own, Poland does more than a third of everything Europe moves.

The usual explanation is cheap labour. That answer is about fifteen years out of date, and there is a statistic almost nobody quotes that proves it.

SOURCES

Every figure in this video comes from a primary source. The main ones:

Eurostat — road freight transport, 2025 reference year road_go_ta_tott (tonne-kilometres, cross-trade, cabotage) road_go_ta_vm (vehicle movements by loading status — the empty-running figures) https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/web/transport/database

Court of Justice of the European Union Joined Cases C-541/20 to C-555/20, Grand Chamber, 4 October 2024, ECLI:EU:C:2024:818

Regulation (EC) No 1072/2009 — Community Licence, cabotage Directive (EU) 2020/1057 — posting of drivers; Arts. 1(3)–(7) Regulation (EU) 2020/1055 — the vehicle-return rule annulled in 2024

A note on the empty-running comparison: Poland is not the best in Europe on this measure — Spain, Lithuania and Czechia all run emptier trucks less often. What Poland does is hold 12.5% across the largest international fleet on the continent, roughly three times the size of the next biggest.
That distinction is made in the video and it matters.
